Special Weather Statement issued June 15 at 12:23PM AKDT by NWS Juneau AK Precipitation over the coast mountains in conjunction with warming temperatures into the next work week will contribute to an increase in river levels over the far northern inner channels of Southeast Alaska. As shower activity diminished, snow melt will become a more dominant factor. Water levels in the Chilkat River, the Skagway River, and the Taiya River are being monitored closely for indications of river rises. Stay tuned for additional updates.

Flood Advisory issued June 16 at 2:00AM AKDT until June 17 at 2:00AM AKDT by NWS Juneau AK Warm daytime and overnight temperatures have continued to allow for melting of high elevation snow and icepack. Continued warm temperatures will allow for more snow and ice to melt during the daytime hours. * WHAT...Flooding caused by snowmelt is expected. * WHERE...The Chilkat River near Areas Around Mile Post 14 And 24 Of The Haines Highway, Near Klukwan And The Chilkat River Bridge. * WHEN...Until 200 AM AKDT Monday. * IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying areas. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 152 AM AKDT, river gauge reports indicate rises in water levels from rapid snowmelt is occurring, and will cause minor flooding. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly, especially near the Chilkat River. - For Chilkat River at Klukwan: At 1:00am the stage was 125.7 feet. Flood Stage is 126.0 feet. Forecast: A crest around 126.35 feet is expected around 10:00am Sunday. Water levels will go above minor flood stage around 4:00am Sunday. Impacts: At 126.0 feet: Bankfull stage. Water will begin to flood backyards along the Chilkat River in the village of Klukwan.
